Leading Equity in STEM for Multilingual Learners

Okhee Lee was among the first to recognize that the educational silos around science/STEM education and language education were not serving students, especially multilingual learners. Today, Okhee advocates for the integration of science/STEM education and language education across research, policy, and practice. Through this integration, Okhee calls for the future of science/STEM education and offers a framework for achieving equity and justice. Based on her decades of research, experience as a member of the writing team for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and leader of the NGSS Diversity and Equity team, and trailblazing analysis of English language proficiency/development standards, Okhee has developed curriculum and professional development programs and instructional resources that support teachers in implementing contemporary science standards with all students.

Story

Okhee lived her first 25 years in South Korea. She grew up in the countryside, poor but happy. She did well in school, completed her master’s degree, and wanted to do more. She was told there were two suitable choices available to a woman: become a career wife or become an old spinster. So, she created a third choice: She left and came to the United States to pursue her Ph.D.
