Integrating Science and Language for All Students with a Focus on English Language Learners

This series includes an introduction, seven topic briefs, and seven webinars developed for the New York State Education Department by Drs. Okhee Lee, Lorena Llosa, Alison Haas, and Scott Grapin from New York University. Based on contemporary research on integrating science and language with a focus on multilingual learners, these teacher resources provide equitable opportunities for multilingual learners to learn contemporary science standards.

Okhee Lee brings research and policy to practice

Okhee and her team developed a yearlong fifth-grade science curriculum called Science And Integrated Language (SAIL) that translates contemporary science standards into classroom practice. Initially, the SAIL curriculum underwent field testing in Elizabeth Public Schools in New Jersey. Then, after field testing in New York City Public Schools, the SAIL program now includes a teacher professional development program and a suite of research instruments. In addition, a variety of teacher resources are freely available online.
