NEW YORK CITY – May 19, 2020 – The Korean-American Educational Researchers Association (KAERA) has announced three winners of the Michael B. Salwen Scholars Program, established by education scholar and New York University professor Okhee Lee in memory of her late husband.
The three recipients are:
- Sun Young Lee, assistant professor, Department of Teacher Education, Weber State University
- Danbi Choe, doctoral candidate, School of Psychology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Seohee Park, doctoral student in educational measurement and statistics, College of Education, University of Iowa
“It is rewarding to be able to help ease the burden of education for young scholars like these outstanding individuals and honor my late husband Michael B. Salwen, who was a scholar and educator. As a Korean-American who came to the United States when I was a young woman, I appreciate and understand how much this scholarship award can mean to young scholars,” Lee said.
Lee established the Michael B. Salwen Scholars Program in 2008, a year after her husband’s death. It previously awarded 37 scholarships to eligible candidates: doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. The second round of scholarship funding will be available from 2020 through 2024.
More than a financial stipend, the program provides intellectual support toward the development of education scholars’ research as well as professional mentoring and network opportunities. To help scholars craft questions, strengthen theoretical frameworks, and improve research skills, they are required to present their research and participate at American Educational Researchers Association (AERA) conferences and attend KAERA meetings, where the scholarships will be awarded.
The KAERA Scholars Program Committee selects scholars based on academic merits and financial need. Selections favor those who demonstrate that their research will contribute to the knowledge base in their fields and their work will contribute to achieving the mission and goals of KAERA.
